Singer-songwriter Mike Kinsella (Owen, Joan of Arc, Cap’n Jazz) loves a good cover. In 2009, he was invited to play a benefit show for Girls Rock! Chicago and took the opportunity to pay homage to one of his favorite musicians - Morrissey. He assembled a band of friends equally eager to take on the challenge and together they helped raise a hefty chunk of change to provide scholarships to GR!C summer camp. After two years, they are reuniting for ONE NIGHT ONLY to play the songs of the Cure. Don’t miss the opportunity to see Mike joined by Bob Nanna (Braid, Hey Mercedes), Joe Trohman (Fall Out Boy), Dustin Currier (The Felix Culpa), Drew Brown (Weekend Nachos) and Mark Rose (Spitalfield) as they channel Robert Smith and company. Chicago’s premier punk rock choir, Blue Ribbon Glee Club, will open with a set of goth tunes to set the mood. And once again, all proceeds benefit Girls Rock! Chicago.

We set an ambitious goal for 2011 - three camps in less than three months. It was hectic, but we managed to fit in two sessions of
Girls Camp and one session of
Ladies Rock Camp into one short little summer. We’d like to thank every volunteer, camper, parent and donor for making it possible. We truly couldn’t have done it without you.
With your help we welcomed 151 Girls Rock capers, who formed 36 new bands. We also greatly expanded our DJ camp, with eight mini Spinderellas taking to the turntables. For session one, we returned to the Metro, and session two found our campers gracing the stage at Bottom Lounge.
Special thanks to the generous donors who kept us fed with delicious and healthy eats in between all the rockin’: Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Fat Willy’s Rib Shack, Revolution Brewing, Rock n’ Roll Noodle Company, Lucia’s, Handlebar, DeLux, Birchwood Kitchen, Winberie’s, The Wormhole, Sweet Cakes Bakery, Bleeding Heart Bakery and La Farine Bakery.
A shout out also goes to our wonderful workshop leaders: Thank You Threadless for loads of t-shirt reconstruction fun, Busy Beaver for sharing the button love, Chicago Women’s Health Center for engaging the girls in diversity awareness, Thousand Waves for super pro self-defense tips, Entymotic Research for caring for our ears, teaching us to do the same and donating fabulous Earlove earplugs, Quimby’s for a generous magazine donation to our zines workshop, and The Feminist Breeder for sharing blog tips & tricks.
Camp week pictures abound on our
Facebook page, and video of all the camper bands can be found on our
YouTube channel. But be warned: repeated viewings will make next year’s camps seem painfully far away.

Constructor Craft Fair is back, and Girls Rock! Chicago is thrilled to be sponsoring the event for the second year in a row. Join us at legendary FitzGerald’s Nightclub in Berwyn on Saturday, June 9th for a day of crafty goodness, yummy food, fine drinks and performances from Girls Rock! Chicago campers. Indoors you’ll find the grads of our June DJ camp spinning records (on the very same stage graced by Elisabeth Shue in Adventures in Babysitting, in fact). The outdoor stage will feature performances by camper band C4 at 3:30pm, and GR!C solo superstar Alex Lund at 4pm. Visit our booth anytime during the day to say “Hi”, and learn more about Ladies Rock Camp, volunteer opportunities and upcoming events. And you should probably grab some of our great new merch while you’re there too: posters, drink coozies, tote bags and more!
Hours are 10am - 6pm, and admission to this family friendly event is FREE. Even better, the first 50 people in line receive a swag bag full of goodies so why not invite your friends and make a day of it? We hope to see you there!
