Girls Rock! Chicago: Rock Camp for Girls 8-16

This Saturday, Exit presents to you a full DJ lineup of Chicago’s finest ladies. A portion of the bar as well as crowd donations will all go to benefit Girls Rock! Chicago.

The Girls Rock! Chicago Volunteer Coordinator staff position is now open for interested applicants! GR!C is an entirely volunteer-run organization, which includes the staff that oversees the year round, day to day operations. All staff positions are unpaid and require a commitment of at least 10 hours per week throughout the year.

Responsibilities and duties

Oversees the recruitment and training of volunteers for all GR!C events, programming, and camps.
Responsible for training, placement and supervision of all GR!C volunteers.
Maintains all communications with GR!C volunteers.
Creates and manages camp volunteer applications, training manuals and documents.
Responsible for coordinating volunteer training and appreciation events.
Maintains volunteer records and databases.
Attends monthly staff meetings and all relevant committee meetings.

Qualifications

Strong verbal and written communication skills
Enthusiastic, positive, well organized
Strong leadership skills
Ability to work as part of a team
Understands and supports GR!C’s mission
Computer literate: Word, Excel, google docs and forms, gmail, wordpress

All week, 65 girls ages 8-16 have been practicing hard and working on perfecting their original songs at Girls Rock! Chicago’s second camp of the summer. Now all they need are adoring fans. That’s where YOU come in! Do your part to encourage our young rockers by cheering them on at the End-of-Camp Extravaganza at Metro. Kids under 8 are admitted free and encouraged to join the all-shorty dance party in front of the stage. Be sure to show up early to catch our first-ever teen DJs warm up the crowd by spinning some awesome tunes.

Everyone at GR!C is so excited for our second camp of 2010, which will run August 2nd-8th. But we need your help! We are still searching for volunteers, and whether you can commit to the whole week or just a few hours, you can help ensure that every camper has the best week of her life. We’re still seeking:

• Counselors—musical experience not required (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm; Sat showcase & Sun recording)
• Instrument teachers—guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, DJ (Mon-Fri, 10:30am-12:30pm)
• Band coaches (Mon-Fri, 2:30-4:30pm; Sat showcase & Sun recording)
• Women to lead workshops on music- or band-related topics like songwriting, zine making, performing, or whatever else you can dream up
• Bands with female members to perform Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 4:30-5:00pm

Girls Rock! Chicago summer camps are right around the corner and that means it’s time for our second annual kick-off show!  Join us Saturday, June 19th when we take the party outside to the yard of our fantastic host school, Josephinum Academy in Wicker Park.  See performances by great Chicago bands The Cathy Santonies, The Runnies, The Ovens and The Baby Magic, and be treated to sets by Girls Rock! Chicago DJs and alumni of last month’s entertaining & inspiring Ladies Rock Camp:

In addition to music, we’ll have plenty of good times for the younger set.  Bring them by for a jump in the bouncy tiger or face painting of their choice.  We’ll provide the cheap burgers, hot dogs, corn on the cob and sweets.  Bring your own blanket or lawn chair and call it a picnic!

Girls Rock! Kick-Off.  Saturday, June 19th.  1-6pm.  All 2010 Girls Rock! campers and children under 8 are admitted FREE.  $5 donation 8 and up.

Girls Rock! Chicago is super excited to sponsor this weekend’s third annual Constructor Craft Fair.  Be sure to visit us and browse our selection of generously donated handmade items, grab a great looking logo tee just in time for Summer, or maybe even complete your collection of Girls Rock! camper CDs!  Whatever you fancy, all proceeds from your purchase will help fund scholarships for our 2010 summer camps.
